Herman Miller Enviro Concerns
Herman Miller boasts several manufacturing locations in the United States. These include: Zeeland, MI; Atlanta, GA; Sheboygan, WI; Sioux City, IA; Lake Mills, WI; Holland, MI. They closed the Spring Lake, MI facility in 2009. In 2006, Herman Miller opened two manufacturing facilities in Ningbo, China, as well as opening a Chinese national headquarters in Shanghai. Herman Miller's Environmental Accomplishments are almost too numerous to list, including their green building technologies, reduced packaging, reduce/reuse/recycle philosophy and much more. Below are listed some of their environmental highlights.- Herman Miller Sayl - Sayl uses fewer parts and less materials than other similar chairs, allowing half the normal packaging. Its constructed in three global zones, allowing for less transportation and thus, less of a carbon footprint. 93% of the chair is made from recyclable materials. Its hollow, meaning it weighs less and is easier to ship. Called an "IKEA Killer" by Treehugger magazine, it was voted in the top three of their 2011 ""Best of Green Readers' Choice Awards.
- Herman Miller Honey - Herman Miller built an eco-friendly factory and offered tours to the public. Paper wasps soon set up shop on the exterior of the factory though, proving themselves to be a nuisance. Rather than use pesticides to control the problem, Herman Miller brought in honey bees to provide natural competition. The honey bees not only made the wasps decide to move, they pollinated flowers in surrounding areas. These healthy 12 colonies of honey bees were used to produce Herman Miller honey, which was in turn bottled and given to guests.
- Integrated Metal Technologies - was the Herman Miller Company's union operation, producing metal parts for Herman Miller office furniture systems in Spring Lake, Michigan. Integrated Metal Technologies workers were represented by United Steelworkers Local 2410. When the Herman Miller Spring Lake facility closed in spring of 2010, all workers were either offered positions at other companies or full severance pay and benefits.
- Herman Miller Energy Centre - features a heat-recovery boiler fueled by burnable solid wastes. This boiler diverts 13,000 tons of solid waste from landfills each year. The Energy Centre was built in the late 1970's and refurbished in 1994.
- Green Buildings Council - is a nonprofit organization, of which Herman Miller is a founder, promoting green building policies, technologies, standards and design for new facilities. Green Buildings is complemented by Energy Star Buildings. Under the Energy Star Buildings program, Herman Miller has switched to energy-efficient lighting.
