SIM cards are issued by mobile phone service carriers and activate the service of your phone once they are inserted in the handset. "SIM" is an acronym for subscriber identification module. The SIM card is a removeable chip where you can store personal data from your mobile phone, such as your photos, phone book numbers, call log and more. Phones operating on the GSM Network (AT&T Wireless (formerly Cingular Wireless) and T-Mobile) use SIM card technology. Sprint PCS, Verizon, and Virgin Mobile are on the competing CDMA network which does not currently make use of cards but has plans to implement the CDMA equivalent of a SIM card, the R-UIM, in the near future. SIM cards can be a way for the mobile phone companies to keep you loyal to their service: some phones are "locked" and have their software set to only recognize SIM cards from a particular carrier. If you have an "unlocked phone", the phone will operate with the SIM card from ANY carrier.
Phones are often given free of charge when you activate a new 2-year contract. Usually, terminating a contract before the end of the agreed term will result in cancellation fees. As if the cancellation fees weren't enough of an incentive to keep you loyal to your cell phone carrier, the free phones are often locked as well. These locked phones will not operate correctly with a SIM card from a different carrier, meaning you will have to get a new handset as well as a new contract.
Sometimes cell phone carriers will unlock your cell phone handset (often for a fee) after an initial period of time has expired. This solution does not always work: if the phone has proprietary settings in place, this may override the "unlocking" and still cause the phone to not function properly with other carriers. Some third-party companies offer "unlocking services" for mobile phone handsets. The issue with proprietary settings remaining even after the phone has been "unlocked" is still an issue with this option occassionally. You can also find instructions online for how to hack certain locked phones and unlock them yourself. Be very careful if you choose to hack your own handset: an improperly unlocked phone can be made completely inoperable.

The at&t Wireless Return Policy for equipment

You can return your unwanted and directly purchased at&t merchandise either at any retail store or by mail within 30 days from the date the equipment was shipped. Your item to be returned must be in like-new condition and with all original components (including the device, battery, charger, instruction manual, software and invoice/receipt) with all confidential information removed from your equipment in order to receive full credit. If your return meets all of these requirements, the original payment method (credit or debit card) will be credited, with this credit appearing within 2 months. Any rebates associated with the returned item will be voided.
- DO NOT attempt to return your AT&T purchase after 30 days from the date of sale have passed. A refund may not be provided and your equipment may not be returned to you.
AT&T Wireless Service Cancellation
- As of October 22, 2009, at&t wireless has an early termination fee of $175 if you cancel your service after 30 days.
- Your activation fee will be refunded if you cancel your service within 3 days of activation
Be sure to cancel your at&t wireless service within 30 days if you want to avoid an early termination fee. After 60 days has passed, each subsequent month will have the cancellation fee decrease by $5. You may also have to return your handset and any equipment upon cancelling your at&t wireless service. If you do not do thisyou may be charged an amount up to the full retail price of the equipment!
Warranty Claims and exchanges
New wireless devices and netbooks have a one-year manufacturer's warranty included. Refurbs carry a 90-day warranty. These conditions also apply to Apple-branded merchandise.
- Your security deposit will take between 1 and 2 billing cycles to be credited to your original form of payment.
- ALL netbook purchases (whether made online or not) have a $35 restocking fee if you return them.
- Retain a copy of your shipping carrier's tracking number for your records.
- All iPhones carry a 10% restocking fee unless purchased without AT&T service (device only sale) and returned unopened.
- Depending on the reason for your return, return shipping charges may apply.
- You may exchange at&t equipment one time within 30 days from the date of your purchase.
- Gift cards, ring-tone cards, equipment received through insurance claims and equipment purchased through authorized dealers or retailers cannot be returned or exchanged through THIS policy. Contact the place where you acquired your equipment or card for further information.
- Funds deposited into a GoPhone Account and Pay As You Go refill cards or PIN or funds are not refundable.
