"Black Friday" sounds really ominous. The busiest shopping day of the year shares its namesake with horror films, historical events and rock songs. There are two explanations for naming the official kick-off to the holiday season as black friday. The first says the term is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and refers to the heavy traffic on that date. Another explanation is that stores are operating at a loss (in the red) before the fourth Friday in November, and high sales put them "into the black" (at a profit). At any rate, most people take the day off from work, stores open as early as 5am and people get vicious trying to get bargain-priced merchandise.

When Is Black Friday This Year?

In 2009, Black Friday falls on November 27. Black Friday is always the Friday after Thanksgiving, or the fourth Friday in November. Some people have stepped things up a notch from Black Friday even by shopping the Thanksgiving Day Sales. Extreme shoppers will already have their place in line from camping out Thanksgiving night for Black Friday doorbusters. Depending how you look at it, successful Black Friday shopping could start on Thanksgiving Evening. Get ready, get set, go!
