When will the After Christmas Sales Start?
Christmas always falls on December 25 and most people have the following day, December 26, off as well. Just like the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday), the day after Christmas has people out early to scoop up bargains in the After Christmas Sales. Another rush happens after the new year begins and carries on through January, giving us the "January Sales". We'll be posting information here as we discover it online. Be sure to check back often! Also, view Centsible.net's tips on what items will be discounted and what you should know when purchasing these items.
- Hot tip for shopping the After Christmas Sales: - spend those gift cards you got for Christmas right away! If the store files for bankruptcy, they may no longer be obligated to honor gift cards. Some gift cards have expiration dates on them - don't let them expire. Finally, reduce the risk that you will lose or forget about them yourself. Gift cards are a great money-maker for stores as so many of them go unused. Don't waste your gift cards, spend them in the After Christmas and New Years Sales!
What items will you get the best deals on during the After Christmas and New Years Sales?
After Christmas and New Years Sales are the way that retailers get rid of overstocked items, clear shelves for the upcoming year's new inventory, returned or exchanged gifts, display items and product service leftovers (primarily for electronics goods).

What Items Will Be Discounted?
Want to know what type of merchandise the stores will be marking down during the After Christmas Sales? Read here for an overview and some advice to consider when purchasing these products.
- Overstocked Items - Items ordered by the store in large quantities that still remain. Most notoriously this includes Christmas gift wrapping paper, ribbons & bows, Christmas ornaments, decor and lighting & trees, Christmas cards and holiday food items like ribbon candy. Sometimes the purchasers didn't have the best crystal balls available and predicted some items would sell alot more than they actually did. These items are new in the box and are set to go quick (although not necessarily ALL of the Christmas items will sell out quickly, the good stuff definitely will!). Most of the After Christmas Sale and New Years Sale "doorbusters" are overstocked items. These are also typically "loss leaders" or items that stores will sell at a loss as bait to get you in their doors.
- Last Year's New Technology & Trends - Every year, home electronics and technology make improvements. Fads change. The bestsellers and top artists might stay on top but also might not be so popular anymore. Stores want to clear their shelves and get ready to stock the latest new products. Last year's items aren't defective or substandard, they're just "last year". If you don't mind not having the height of technology, you can grab a bargain on these deals.
- Returned and Exchanged Items - People often get duplicate gifts, similar items or gifts they just plain didn't like (or want). These gifts, if they don't get "regifted" end up back at the store. Items that the store figured it had sold are now inventory again, taking up valuable counter space. You probably won't find these items on December 26, but give it a week or so. Also, you won't be able to find any open-box returns specifically online. Make a trip to the actual store and look in the Clearance area. Sometimes returned items won't even have been opened and maybe can't be identified as a return. If there is an open box, check to make sure all the parts and instruction manuals are included. If anything is missing, scratched or torn, be sure to bargain a lower price. Be careful if buying returned electronics as most of these items are deeply discounted and sold "as is".
- Display Items - Obviously with new merchandise on the shelves, stores will no longer need models that have been out-of-the-box and on display. They want to get rid of them! For items like clothes and shoes, you most likely won't even notice if it was a display item. Display furniture will likely have minor dents and scratches (and will require you to transport it to your home on your own most likely - fully assembled). For electronics, check that you will be receiving the instruction manual and any accessories. If not, negotiate a lower price. Is an extended warranty available? If so, its probably a good idea to purchase one.
